To know God is to have stories to tell #180

Knowing God means you have stories to tell. If you know God you will have stories of how that relationship has changed your life and how God has worked through you. Consider the woman at the well John 4:7-38. In this story the Samarian woman has a conversation with Jesus that leads her to go back into her town and to tell others what he told her. That is a story. Again in Luke 24:13-35 we learn of two disciples who travel along the road with the resurrected Jesus as He tells them about the Scriptures. These and many others indicate to us that knowing God is accompanied by a story to tell. There is the story of how you first met God, how you came to believe in Him, and how God has used you to reach others. These stories don’t always look the same. They may take many forms but they must be present. If you cannot tell the story of how God has used you in the life of others that is a problem. Matthew 21:18-22 illustrates this point. When we come before God He will seek fruit. If He cannot find fruit in our lives He may cast us away. Do you know that you have been used by God to produce fruit?

The stories that bounce around my head are many and they illustrate my point. I remember the arrogance of my five year old self who decided between serving God and conquering the world. The time I almost drowned and put my life in God’s hands. I remember the day I went on a walk at night and yelled at God and felt Him comforting my soul even as  I tried to push Him away. I recall praying for a man and the tremble throughout his body. I remember talking to a girl who had been sexually abused about God’s will. Each of these and many more are things that show God’s work in my life. God is here. He is active. And I have seen God at work. Have you?
