#169 7 Spurgeon Principles from: Spurgeon’s Theology for Multiplying Disciples and Churches

The phrase Calling out the Called is part of the farm system mentioned in Spurgeon’s Theology for Multiplying Disciples and Churches Earls writes that “A farm system can benefit greatly from developing five components: calling out the called, internships, mentor-coaching, formal studies, and wise sending practices” (Earls 2022). This calling out the called, is identifying those called to ministry and putting them into action in the church.

Of the seven Spurgeon principles the top two that I want to develop are prayer and preparing preachers. Prayer is vital for the pastor. Anything that is good that a pastor might do is from the Lord. Our ability to do good things is directly dependent on our relationship to God and His working in our lives. While all churches and pastors ought to be preparing the next generation of preachers. Churches must raise up leaders within to plant new churches, to take over existing churches, and to replace those in leadership when the time comes.

I want to develop in the life perspective of how a pastor ought to see God. Spurgeon said that “Men infer the Master from the servant; … You cannot dissociate … the Lord from His representative … this is no small matter” (Earls 2022). As a pastor I must properly relate to God and show myself as a representative of Him. My life for better or worse reflects on how the world sees God. I do not want to be a hypocrite but rather to be as much like Christ as possible to be a good example to all people whom I would venture to help and care for.
